I am a full-time letter artist and illustrator specializing in bespoke typography and botanical imagery.

On the farm where I was raised, vibrant produce, chrome tractor emblems, and weathered, hand-lettered signs were a significant presence. Old growth trees and tangling weeds flourished and faded. Though it would be years until such deeply rooted influences would manifest in my work, these scenes moved me to create.

I studied illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, then spent seven years in San Francisco. Following that, I lived in Auckland, New Zealand, and began to draw flowers. After one year, I returned to the East coast to study typeface design at The Cooper Union's Type@Cooper program in 2014.

I currently work independently from a cozy, historic farmhouse between New York City and Philadelphia and draw plants and letterforms every day. Aside from that, I can be found doing a spastic Lindy hop, stalking flowers with my camera, or gallivanting outdoors. I return to New Zealand regularly for creative nourishment and inspiration.

This site was created using the Squarespace theme Avenue. To my dear web-whiz friends who have advised and supported me in making over this site, you know who you are. Thank you.

The Ellis logotype is handwritten by me. Portrait taken by Tim Gibson at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in December 2016.

The typeface is Maiola by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione at TypeTogether. Fonts hosted by Typekit.

Many of the documentation photographs on this site appear with credit. Those without credit are my own.
